Food & Drink.
The best, the biggest and the oldest produce markets in south west Wales are a must
for enhancing your visit - try Carmarthen ham, cockles, laver bread, fresh baked
welshcakes and 'bara brith'.
Indoor markets are a feature at the heart of many of the towns and cities of Wales.
Historically, royal charters were granted to trade exclusively, some dating back
to the twelfth century. The markets offer a vibrant mix of fresh food and general
products and feature independent traders who pride themselves on delivering quality
produce at a reasonable price.
The famous Swansea Market
with its cockles, laverbread and fresh fish landed daily, also has locally produced
bread, such as the Swansea batch, as well as numerous butchers selling Welsh lamb
and beef. Local growers bring their vegetables in season from the Gower Peninsula
to complete the colourful picture.
Carmarthen Market has
many unique products ranging from farmhouse cheese such as Teifi, to locally caught
salmon, salt back bacon and Carmarthen ham. The biggest market in Wales is held
in Neath and has become famous for its faggots and peas! Pembrokeshire's fortnightly
Farmers' Market in Haverfordwest has just won the national accolade of 'Farmers'
Market of the year 2006' and deservedly so!
