A Sense Of Place.
Modern Writers, Stevie Davies
Stevie Davies Swansea-born Stevie Davies is enjoying even greater success with her novels since she turned to her home city for inspiration. Stevie has written nine novels, the most recent of which are set in Swansea, Mumbles and Gower. The action in The Element of Water, a powerful story focusing on the aftermath of the second world war, is divided between Germany and Mumbles, and the book ends movingly on Mumbles Pier. This critically acclaimed novel was longlisted for the Booker and Orange Prizes and won Welsh Book of the Year 2002. Her latest novel, Kith and Kin, was nominated for the 2004 Orange Prize. Set in Swansea and Gower, the novel explores the turbulent lives and complex relationships of two cousins growing up in the Swansea of the 1950s, and coming of age in the permissive 1960s. As she said in a recent interview, "what could be a more beautiful and interesting place to set a novel than Swansea and the Gower?"
Stevie has also published widely in the academic sphere, and is Director of Creative Writing at Swansea University.
